Product Description

My Thoughts on the Chopstick Master™ by John Economaki

I have been designing tools full-time for over 32 years and can honestly say that nothing in my past prepared me for the reception of this tool. The whole story is crazy and you can read how this amazing tool came to be here.

What I realized, completely serendipitously, is that we live in a culture that is craving something more than what technology provides. We now have two generations of Americans who likely were never exposed to Industrial Arts in their education. Nobody knows how to make anything anymore and it’s no surprise that some of the best paying jobs in America are plumbers and electricians.  I know of kids who had to call AAA because they had no clue how to put the spare tire on their car. Looking back, I wish it was mandatory that boys were exposed to home economics. I also know of one young teenager, who when informed by her father that her checking account was over drafted responded by saying, “That is impossible Dad, I still have checks.” My own grown son recently told me that he will never forgive me for not teaching him furniture making. When I reminded him of his youthful comment that “people who work with their hands are stupid,” he said “I shouldn’t have listened to him.” That is one person who is not getting a family discount from Bridge City!

And the same thing is true in China. Nobody knew how the ubiquitous chopstick was made, and I too was clueless until this little tool popped out of my head.

Between March and August of 2015, over 1,000 pair of chopsticks have been made. The response of the makers, whether here in the U.S, China, or Taiwan is simply pure joy.  I have never been associated with any tool that simply makes people feel this good about themselves. And it just may be that during this process, people are rediscovering the enriching experience of “making”.  It sure beats being addicted to Facebook.

“What a cool thing, to make perfect and beautiful chopsticks on the first try. In this 'digital world' it’s so nice doing something fun by making and using something that is real.”
- R. West, St. Paul, MN

“The Chopstick Master is so much fun it literally tricked some dinner guests into becoming woodworkers. They still send me selfies of them eating with their chopsticks (burritos, with chopsticks, really?), and I won’t be surprised if two of them come back for woodworking lessons.”
- Christopher Schwarz, Ft. Mitchell, KY

The Chopstick Master™ allows anybody, regardless of experience, age 8 and up, to make a pair of gallery quality chopsticks. What I mean by that is they are flawless. Each chopstick starts out as a 270mm x 7mm square blank. When complete, it becomes a gracefully tapered and perfectly proportioned chopstick that is square on the outboard end and transitions to an impeccable octagonal tip either 2mm or 5mm in diameter. The finish of the wood, because it was cut with a block plane, is as smooth as you can make wood. The final touch, a pyramidal finial, is cut with four simple passes over the special crosscut blade and takes less than a minute. This cut elevates the chopstick from amateur status to professional and I assure you, nobody has seen this done more efficiently or more accurate, particularly by someone with ZERO woodworking skills.

In other words, it is possible for one’s very first woodworking project to be perfect. I certainly cannot make that claim and I doubt many can.

“The people behind the Chopstick Master have thought of everything needed to make this remarkable, well-made device something the whole family can enjoy.”
- R. Bare,  Preston, CT

“Perfect diamond cuts on the end – I am really impressed, this thing is so much fun. The Chopstick Master™ is even higher on the instant gratification list than turning – this is addictive!
- Konrad Sauer, Ontario, Canada

The Chopstick Master™ comes complete with enough blanks to make 10 pairs of chopsticks, and when you divide the cost of the kit by 10, you can get a ball park cost for a pair of chopsticks.  Over a period of time, as you make more and more chopsticks, the initial cost of the unit becomes almost negligible.  Currently in the U.S., hand-made finished chopsticks are retailing around $60, and they can go much higher.

For those of you who have a creative voice that needs to be heard, chopsticks make a great platform for expression. They can be painted, air-brushed, gilded, lacquered, embellished, and the list goes on. I have seen chopsticks in both China and Japan that are well north of $500.  They make terrific gifts.

For those of you who shy away from using chopsticks, I believe that if you made your own, the impetus for use will overcome current inabilities. Chopsticks are fun and much more graceful than stabbing your food with a fork.  And with proper care, a single pair can last a lifetime.

“We hosted a chopstick making party and all our guests were non-woodworkers. Who knew you could make grown men and women so happy by building chopsticks – we had loads of fun!”
- M. Garahi,   Denver, CO

The Chopstick Master™ is a professional tool with an all metal base and is designed to last multiple generations. And to see first-hand the joy I have described above, I invite you to host an Asian food themed party where your guests make their own chopsticks or “they go home hungry.”  I have hosted five such parties this summer and the results are identical – it is a giant fun fest!  I guarantee you will have hosted one of the most fun and memorable dinner parties your friends have ever experienced.

When you ponder the price of the Chopstick Master™, ponder this: we have sold thousands of the HP-8 Mini Block Plane that is included in this kit for $249 and up. The Chopstick Master™ is the best tool value we have ever produced, and clearly the most fun tool you will ever use.

5 Year Limited Warranty
Fine Tools, LLC, or any of our authorized dealers, warrants to the original retail purchaser that the Chopstick Master™ tool shall be free from defects in material and workmanship for five years from the date of purchase.

This warranty shall be limited to the cost of repair or replacement of the defective item, at Fine Tools' or an authorized dealer's option, and shall not include incidental or consequential damages. Some states do not allow the exclusion of or modification of incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitation or exclusion may not apply to you.

Please note as well that the plane that comes with this unit (the 2015 version) is not compatible with the 2nd version of the Chopstick Master.

What is the difference between the Chopstick Master 2015 (the original) and the Chopstick Master Version 2?

On the Chopstick Master Version 2, the main body has been simplified and the hook that lies flat against your workbench has been re-designed. The sliding table and saw blade have been eliminated making this unit much more kid friendly. The original depth skids are now set flush with the HP-8 plane sole to which a new, PIVOTING depth sled is attached and the pyramidal finial is now cut with the plane. In addition, the Chopstick master 2 box is half the size of the original version. The Chopstick Master 2 comes with one red arm for making Chinese Chopsticks (5mm). The Chopstick Master 2015 (the original) comes with both the red arm as well as the green arm for making Japanese Chopsticks (2mm).

Do any chopstick blanks come with the Chopstick Master?

Yes. There are enough blanks in the box to make 10 sets of chopsticks. In addition, there are 5 red bags and 5 blue bags to hold the chopsticks.

Can I purchase more chopstick blanks?

Yes. Bridge City Tool Works carries several different types of blanks in a set of 10 including Teak, Maple, Walnut, Ceylon Iron Wood, Padauk and Cherry. (Depending on availability.).

Can I make my own chopstick blanks?

Yes. Each chopstick starts out at 270mm x 7mm square. There are videos on the internet explaining how to make your own blanks.

Why would I use the 50° Honing Guide?

If you are making your own blanks out of scrap bin or if you run across wood with difficult grain encounters.

What is the Flat Stock Arm (blue) used for?

The Flat Stock Arm (blue) is used in conjunction with the HP-8 plane and will allow you to thickness plane banding, inlay strips and other thin stock requirements down to .06" thick. Its also great for Kumiko projects.

What can I do to alleviate tear out when making my finial cut?

There are a few things that could cause tear out, which probably happens at the corners of the diamond finial. Here are a few things you can try: 1. Ensure that your plane iron is sharp since you want clean cuts. A dull blade will pull the grains rather than cut. 2. Make sure your plane is set to do fine cuts (closed mouth with a shallow depth of cut). Lighter cuts will less likely to tear out than rougher/deeper cuts. 3. Since you are working with end-grain, some types of wood will be more likely to create tear outs than others. Be careful with harder or "grainier" woods because they are more likely to chip/tear out. 4. Lastly, be gentle with your cuts! The process of planing the diamond finial should be a motion of gentle skew cut with minimal back and forth cutting motion. Let the blade do most of the work. You are only applying gentle pressure.

  1. An All-In-One Solution for Making Chopsticks Review by Alex Leslie

This has got to be one of the best tool "kits" on the market today! It only makes chopsticks, but what a joy to use.

The body of the tool is truly multi-tasking; it is the jig to make chopsticks, trim them to size and sets the depth skids properly and offers a honing surface for the plane iron underneath.

We start by checking the depth skid adjustment on the included HP-8 plane using the machined channels across the jig. Then select which diameter chopsticks you want to make and install the color coded way for that. Follow the instructions, numbering the sides and setting the depth dials per instructions. Plane all four sides and the corners, cut to length, oil and go to dinner. It is the most fun you'll have woodworking; hands down!

A honing guide for the plane iron is included and a .1 micron film is attached in a way on the bottom of the jig. Just turn it over, give the iron a few strokes and you're back in business.

This is a great tool to create fine quality chopsticks for family, friends and complete strangers. I can see it being the life of a stir-fry party, too! But then, you might need more than one..... (Posted on 1/15/16)

  2. Not just beautifully made, and not just a joy to work with, but genuine fun as well. Review by Fishrule

I have a small woodworking business creating items for the kitchen and home. At some point this summer I began making sushi plates and realized that chopsticks would probably be a good addition. An internet search followed and by sheer coincidence I located the Chopstick Master website just one week into the pre-order period. I've probably collected a dozen of Bridge City Tools' creations over the years, and all of them are in regular use in my shop. Knowing your commitment to quality I couldn't open my wallet fast enough.

Prior to an art show this Fall I called BCT to inquire about the timing of the delivery of the CM. Consuelo Rivera told me that the tool was delayed and would not be ready to ship in time for me to use it to make chopsticks for the show. I'm used to the quality of BCT's tools, indeed, I've come to expect it. I did not expect, however, what Consuelo did next: she offered to send me a CM prototype until the production unit arrived! A week later I was in my workshop madly making chopsticks and enjoying every minute of it. Consuelo even included a UPS label with which to return it to BCT at her expense!

Good customer service is rare, but this gesture blew me away.

As an aside, we stayed at a friend's home while at the show. I pulled out the CM and some blanks that I had pre-prepared, and we had a chopstick making party. Our friends were thrilled with the unit, impressed by its quality and ease of use, and over the moon about the chopsticks that they themselves made. Many of them had never touched a woodworking tool, let alone made something both beautiful and useful.

This is all to say a heartfelt "thank you" for your continuing excellence in product design and execution, and your amazing and surprising customer service. You've reinforced my commitment to your tools and to your company. (Posted on 1/14/16)

  3. A fun product that's addictive! Review by Neil

Purchased one of these and have had a blast making chopsticks with family and friends. It takes about 15 minutes to make a pair of chopsticks and the system could not be easier.

This is one of the most collaborative products Bridge City has ever created and a blast to use! Those who I've had make them are amazed at how easy it is to create something that you can enjoy over a nice dinner.

Congrats to BCTW on getting this out the door! Now I need to work on my cooking skills!
